Cricket In Brighton

One of the best parts of my job, working for E-Democracy.Org, is the opportunity to visit our colleagues and volunteers around the county and the world. This week, I’m in the UK visiting with folks involved in E-Democracy.Org projects or interested in starting one. I’m going to do my best to practice what I teach, in our SPED outreach workshops, by using online tools to document as much of my trip as possible.

Today, I arrived in the UK and came directly to Brighton, where I’m staying with E-Democracy.Org board member Dan Jellinek. Dan and I spend a good part of the day catching up on E-Democracy.Org business. Later in the afternoon, we took a break while I learned how to play cricket for the first time. I figure, if I’m going to do work in the UK, I better learn how to play cricket.

Watch how I first bat the ball and then bowl (throw the ball) with such perfection. Please, try to imagine the beautiful catch that is not included at the very end of this video.

Later in the evening, Dan and I were joined by E-Democracy.Org volunteer Derek Parkinson.

One of the most notable events of the evening, was when Dan and I were approached at a party by someone who identified themselves as a “fan” of the Brighton and Hove Issues Forum, and proceeded to spend several minutes telling us how useful she found the forum as a means of keeping up with what is happening in Brighton & Hove. “Knowledge is power” she said, and according to her, the forum is a means of distributing knowledge about some of the important issues facing Brighton and Hove. Interestingly enough, she identified herself as a lurker in the forum, that has never actually posted to the forum.
